So the above picture pretty much describes how I feel right now; I have a (sort-of) social life (ok, no, that's a total lie, but whatever), I have "hobbies", I have no concentration and find no happiness in doing schoolwork and I have mid-years coming up in less than a week. So while I was sitting here contemplating about all that I still have to do, I met this one good, old friend. Her name was stress… And the thing is, we all face it; considering our busy lives and all the hasty people around us. Whether it is because you are late for an appointment or you still have to do a lot but you have limited time, as a teenager or young-adolescent you are most probably a professional-stress-facer. So..., I have made a list of 9 tips to beat stress!

1. It sounds cliché, but it actually really works to focus on your breathing. When you are stressed, it might be very difficult to pay attention to your breathing especially when you are hasty but I promise, when you take a deep breath and meanwhile stand on the heel of your feet and slowly move forward towards your toes, you will feel way calmer and you can actually think clearly again!

2. Get enough sleep! I know, when the finals are coming up, staying up late to study sounds like a great idea but… it actually isn’t. You should make sure you start getting (more than) enough sleep a week before your tests are coming up so that you will be relaxed when you study and work and thus have a better concentration. Moreover, it is always healthy to get enough sleep. ;-)

3. Plan! Again, it sounds a kind of cliché, but it really works. And it’s not only planning when you will study or do your homework for each subject, it is also planning which part of the homework you will do for each subjects. When you are writing essays, I promise it really helps to make an Index and just write down when (at which day or at which time of the day) you will write each section. Of course, don't forget to plan some free time as well; humans have a attention span shorter than that of a gold-fish (according to this website and a lot of other articles) so you'll definitely need that boost.
Gold fishes can still feel stressed too though, don't treat them like they are attention seekers :(
4. Take breaks. Especially when doing your homework, normal work or when studying. You should always take breaks. It has been proven that concentration weakens after about 30 minutes. As I said, I always divide my tasks and I do the same for my breaks. When I have finished one task on my planning, I just take a little break. Sometimes I play the piano, other times I will go on Facebook or I will just run for a little while. The main point is that you can relax for a while so that you can focus on your work when you start again.

5. Laugh! Laughing is healthy. But you have already heard that before I guess. However, what you might not know is that besides the fact that it is healthy, it is also a stress-relieving “activity”. So that’s like shooting three birds with one shot; you will get happy, healthy and hassle-free!

6. Workouts. Go kick some ass, girl. Whilst burning calories and getting healthy, you are also getting relaxed! When you sport you produce more endorphin, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine in your brain and those cause the happy-feelings. En that, of course, reduces stress! Moreover, sporting helps to relax your muscles because you tighten your muscles. Sounds weird, huh? But you actually stop them from being in the stress-mode.

7. When I was in 8-grade I once participated in a mindfulness-curses. Okay, I'll admit, I did not really liked it back then but I guess it did help. You can do a variety of exercises: respiratory-exercises but also just exercise that make you aware of what you are doing and thinking. And besides that, it really helps you to fall a sleep. Especially the respiratory-exercises really helped me to fall asleep quickly (and believe me; I’m not such a good sleeper ;)). Do you want some example-exercises? Look at this website and maybe Google some more.

8. Listen to relaxing music. Music can have different effects on your brain and your well-being. It is really true that, as the name says, relaxing music makes you relaxed (or at least for the majority of the people). Ludovico Einaudi is a composer who has made several (beautiful) pieces of classical and relaxing music. Just search on his name in Google or on YouTube!
J (Oh, by the way, when you don’t think his music is beautiful or relaxing at all, just look for “Relaxing Music” on YouTube; YouTube has loads and loads of songs that work relaxing.)

9. Organise and clean up. A clean and organised room gives serenity. Some people say that the mess in your room represents the mess in your head (Oh, wow… Guess my head is a big mess than!). But, for me it works, in a pretty and clean room I work much better. I don’t get distracted by other things namely.
